I am very familiar with The area in Lake County where Gregg was buried. At one time there was a roadside monument that was vandalized and then removed in this area along Hwy 20. I never took the time to stop and read what was on the monument. I have since wondered if it was in honor of Gregg. This monument was erected in Batchlor Valley Lake County.
Gregg’s name is immortalized by a CalTrans sign where Hwy 299 crosses Gregg Creek. Just a few harrowing miles away from the low pass now called Berry Summit, from where one can see Humboldt Bay in the distance.
I often wonder which way they went to avoid Burnt Ranch Gorge, or where they crossed the South Fork of the Trinity in November with mules?
Great history! I read Commerce of the Prairies a number of year ago and liked it. I never knew there was more to come on the story of Gregg’s life!
