Interesting article! I wrote about music and the brain for Discover Magazine in 2001 (see http://discovermagazine.com/2001/aug/featmusic) so I am interested in this topic. However, I’m not sure whether it matters if learning music increases intelligence or not. Studying music is in and of itself fun for children if they are keen on learning. To promote it as increasing intelligence (whether or not it does) just adds music to the the long list of activities that we are supposed to do in order to succeed in life. My son is learning to play the piano now (as I did as a child and adult) and I see how much satisfaction he gets from learning to play, for example, “Help,” by the Beatles. That sense of satisfaction is in and of itself worth the effort: Music for music’s sake, not for the potential and theoretical effect it may have in the future. Thanks for writing this!
