Sadly, the world seems destined to be turned into purely a cultivated garden, with planned monocultures for human exploitation, with all delicate and varied habitats for the many varied and unknown species on the earth destroyed, along with those species that cannot adapt to human domination.
It would seem that we are destroying everything we come in contact with…You could say we are the plague, however, in being this we will guarantee our own destruction, How?Well, Mother Nature in all her wisdom, tends to destroy whatever puts the balance out of kilter which is what we’ve been doing for centuries, I’m afraid there will be that one species we will destroy out of hand that will trigger our demise and rightly so. WE ARE A SELFISH LOT. A species whose self-indulgence is going to lead our extinction.
Good ideas. Here’s another one: Let’s stop the practices that generate articles about species endangerment.
Cloning of the butterfly is not necessary. The main food plant Aristolochia dielsiana has been cloned by villagers for decades now and local populations of QABB do fine. The problems are these: 1. There is no eco tourism infrastructure that gives a financial benefit to the locals who plant Aristolochia for larval food and flowers for the adult butterflies. 2. The locals make money only from illegal sales of butterflies or chrysalis to collectors agents, notably from Japan and Germany. 3. By law expatriates may not farm the butterfly and licences are issued by government officials only to relatives who find the illegal trade an easier business than eco tourism. 4. Well meaning overseas experts fly in and offer high tech solutions without ever taking the time to understand the convoluted local and regional politics around this issue. Overseas experts are never taken to locations where the QABB does quite well. 5. I ran a laboratory where we cloned A dielsiana but were prevented form establishing a population of QABB in West New Britain in order to create a refuge for when the next volcanic eruption occurs near Popondetta.
The Creator 0f this reality show called “Life on Earth” is shutting the show down due to lack of respect. Nothing can live under extreme capitalism.
Instead of buying some fighter jets, the USA or any other country in the world should invest money in preserving, mapping and storing DNA samples to recreate these species in the future, open access….
Looks like a program to capture and clone these rare insects should be undertaken, we could keep their species from flaming out and losing them to the future….
