Although this appears backward to us, it was not so long ago that some similar concepts were found in the U.S. When I was pubescent and had my period, it was called being “unwell,” I was told not to touch plants (my touch would kill them), and definitely not to go swimming during menstruation. I should add that my mother was U.S. born, so this was not a carryover from the “old country.” I suspect there are still corners of the country where similar terms and superstitions can be found.
