American circumcision – the export: https://onewe.global/dear-un-please-do-your-human-rights-due-diligence/
All genital cutting must end.
What may also be surprising for some readers to learn is that, even in the U.S., countless medicalized circumcisions of infants result in partial or total penile amputation. Article 24.3 of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child urges “States Parties shall take all effective and appropriate measures with a view to abolishing traditional practices prejudicial to the health of children.” All nontherapeutic circumcisions – regardless of gender, tribal or medical setting, or whether by force (as with infants) or social coercion (as with older boys) – violate the child’s fundamental human right to bodily integrity and genital autonomy. The harm is real (www.CircumcisionHarm.org) and the time is long overdue for societies to find better, non-mutilating ways to welcome their sons into the world and into manhood.
Stop mutilating the genitals of boys and men and this wouldn’t happen or be necessary. You outlaw it happening to women and girls, extend the same protection to males!
How anyone can read this and not consider it equally as much a human rights violation as the ritual circumcision of girls is beyond me. There’s so much fuss over FGM, but most people role their eyes at the suggestion that male circumcision is equally as bad. Of course equating female cutting done in a hut with an unsterile blade with a medicalized male circumcision in the US seems ridiculous, but those are 2 extremes. Why is the ritual cutting on males not also considered a human rights violation? Why isn’t the medicalization of male cutting not condemned like that of females?
The war against FGM will not succeed until the campaign is sex neutral and aims to end ALL nontherapeutic genital cutting of ALL humans. Boys are human too!
The time is long overdue to END the barbaric insanity of genital mutilation (aka “circumcision”) forced upon infants, children and youth. Peer pressure can be addressed and this disgusting practice eradicated. All human beings have inherent human rights to body integrity and autonomy.
The level of stigma among amaXhosa for not being circumcised is vey high: the term “inkwenkwe”, or uncircumcised one, is a deadly insult among adults. SO TOO THE STIGMA OF NOT HAVING “GONE TO THE MOUNTAIN”, AS IT IS TERMED WHEN YOU UNDERGO TRADITIONAL CIRCUMCISON. Thus, the traditions persist, despite there being perfectly acceptable surgical alternatives.
I am shocked I have never heard of this? I’ve heard of female genital mutilation – many times. Sexism goes both ways. The men have been ignored.
Of course we could avoid all of this surgical pain and trauma, not to mention the considerable expense, by simply letting boys be to begin with. It is time for “traditional” cultures to re-appraise their customs in light of scientific knowledge – of the beneficial functions of the human foreskin, for example. Forget the HIV-prevention propaganda. Circumcision is barbaric. It is degrading not only to the male victim but humanity as a whole. Would that I could, I too would trade my circumcised penis for an intact one. But genital surgery is the problem, not the solution.
